In the middle of the Prinzregent-Luitpold Terrace in Munich's Bogenhausen district, the golden Angel of Peace keeps watch over the state capital. The monument commemorates the 25th anniversary of peace after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and was built between 1896 and 1899. In her right hand the statue holds an olive branch as a symbol of peace, in her left a carved image depicting the Greek goddess Athena. The gilded figure represents Nike, the goddess of victory, and is enthroned 38 meters above the ground on a Corinthian column. Below it is a walk-in temple, on the corner pillars of which are the portraits of important contemporary figures such as the German Emperor Frederick III. From the terrace complex, visitors can enjoy a unique view of the fountain complex below and Prinzregentenstrasse. Every year, on a weekend in July, the Peace Angel Festival is still celebrated on the square below the monument.
