JFK fallout shelter in Palm Beach

The Detachment Hotel, known as the Kennedy Bunker, actually has an area of only 140 m2 and was commissioned in 1960. The facility served as protection against nuclear attacks for the then president John F. Kennedy in case he was at his family residence in Palm Beach. The existence of the bunker was kept secret until 1974, despite its closure in 1963. In 1998, the bunker was opened to the public for the first time and classified as a historic site. Since 2017, the facility is no longer accessible.
